Growth of GDP has been the goal of economic policy for decades. Since the financial crisis, we've seen a new approach emerge, looking at the broader economy, centering wellbeing. How can we make the question 'how is the Amsterdammer doing?' the central focus point in new urban economic policy? And what would this mean for the relations between government, market, citizens and collectives?

The Broad Wellbeing Monitor, the Donut city passport, or the Wellbeing Index: these are just a few examples of alternative instruments that we can use to measure the progress of the economy, alternatives that can help us steer away from just GDP growth. Many people agree that we need to make money, but we are also seeing more and more other things being asked of the economy, or things that the economy needs to take into account. Like climate protection. Or a decent living wage, or social security, essential services, but also values like equality and a more just division of wealth.
In this event, we will look for an answer to the question how can we implement such an alternative instrument in Amsterdam? And what are the barriers to this? And how can we overcome these barriers?
New economic thinking requires us to re-envision the relationships between the market, the state, citizens and collectives. We need to move towards much more democratic local economies and more ownership of the shared resources by citizen collectives. Where governments are now mostly looking for collaborations with large private companies (PPPs - public private partnerships), we need to explore alternative models called PCPs: where the C can stand for commons, collective, civic, cooperative or community.
In this event we discuss together what we can and should do in Amsterdam, looking at international examples.
