Cities for Change: Opportunities for Municipalism in Berlin
A few months before the elections in September 2021, we want to discuss the chances for a municipalist platform in Berlin in the framework of the pan-European Cities for Change Forum and critically discuss the role of (organised) civil society before and after the elections.
In doing so, the idea of municipalism will serve as a model for a guiding vision of the democratisation of institutions. How can we make institutions more democratic in the future? How can social movements and initiatives use grassroots democratic instruments to create influence?

Municipalism describes the interplay of local politically active communities of activists, working groups and neighbourhood councils with translocal networking of municipally oriented cities (Amsterdam, Zagreb, Barcelona) and an orientation towards global challenges. In addition, municipalist platforms show new ways for local politics and experiment in the way civil society, administration and politics interact.
In doing so, the idea of municipalism will serve as a model for a guiding vision of the democratisation of institutions. How can we make institutions more democratic in the future? How can social movements and initiatives use grassroots democratic instruments to create influence? Together we want to share our enthusiasm for a munizipalist Berlin and gather impulses for further work.
