How to ecologically transition towards the next Naples? Take care of the planet, Take action in the territories
The pandemic is only a dramatic symptom of the larger socio-environmental crisis caused by the global warming and the destruction of several natural habitats. This crisis is the result of the unequal distribution of power within the economic system which exploits and extracts resources and values from people and territories.
Any individual ecological awareness or market solution is imperative, and still too little, too late. We must change the economic system. As warned even by the United Nations "only a fundamental transformation at the system level through technological, economic and social factors, including paradigms, purposes and values, can reverse the current trends which threaten the well-being of present and future generations and the survival of other species" . There is a deep dicotomy between what it should happen for our survival and what the power structures are effectively willing to do, presenting the climate crisis as a "risk factor" for the economy and not the contrary.
In this framework, we will take into account the inputs and knowledge provided by the climate justice movements to better address the greatest urgency of our time. We will talk about the ecological transition, the struggles for communities and the false solutions which can affect their social and environmental weelbeing to an even more dramatic extent.
We will look into the issue from local lens, listening to stories and voices from San Giovanni a Teduccio, a suburb in the east side of Naples which is facing, with resistance and critical thinking, one of these false solutions: the costruction of a large storage site for twenty thousand cubic meters of Liquefied Natural Gas (GNL).
Speakers:
Salvatore De Rosa, Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies
Elena Gerebizza, ReCommon
Paola Imperatore, Political Science University of Pisa
Enzo Morreale, No GNL - Comitato Civico di San Giovanni a Teduccio (local community group)
Anna Riccardi, Famiglia di Maria Foundation
