Why do we need a new economy? A new economy is equitable and democratic; reduces inequality; helps to counter the climate crisis; and ensures that money and value flow back into local areas and neighbourhoods. It includes a strong, local democracy, with public authorities at the service of the residents and their well-being.
The current system serves the market and companies instead of residents’ well-being; creates inequality; and deprives citizens of power and influence. Basic needs – housing, energy, care, water, education, waste treatment, public transport – have largely been given over to private companies to be traded as commercial products. A housing crisis, the climate crisis, poverty, loneliness, pollution and social exclusion: these problems plague both Amsterdam and many other European cities, and we feel the impacts every day.
